INSTEAD OF WAKING UP TO THE CELEBRATION, I WOKE UP TO A CALL FROM A FRIEND WHO SAID, DID YOU SEE THE NEWS? AND I SAID, NO. AND AND HERE IT WAS, MY PLACE, OUR PLACE. AND SO IT WAS DEVASTATING. AND I CALLED HIM RIGHT AWAY BECAUSE THIS IS A BIG FAMILY, ALL OF US. THE SUPPORT FROM THE COMMUNITY WAS CLEAR AS COUNTLESS CLIENTS AND FRIENDS SHOWED UP TO BEGIN THE PROCESS OF REBUILDING. WITHOUT THAT, ROULEAU SAYS, THIS SPACE WOULDN’T BE HERE. A LITTLE OVER A YEAR LATER. YOU GET TO REALLY APPRECIATE WHAT YOU DO HAVE, AND WHAT I DO HAVE IS PHENOMENAL STAFF AND PHENOMENAL CLIENTS. THEY HAD EVERY OPPORTUNITY TO RUN AND JUST LEAVE ME HANGING, AND THEY STUCK BY MY SIDE. COVERING WESTMOREL

My Fitness Kitchen has reopened its doors, returning to its original location at the Latrobe 30 Shoppes.A little over a year since a devastating fire left several businesses in the shopping plaza heavily damaged, owner Mark Rullo, his staff and loyal clients are celebrating a new beginning with an all-new space. My Fitness Kitchen is not just a gym but a place where building strength and fueling up in the kitchen go hand in hand, according to Rullo. The focus at the facility is on longevity, health and creating a sense of community. “No matter what goes on in life, nothing is going to make it better if you don’t take care of your health,” Rullo said.Reflecting on the events of the past year, Rullo recalls the morning of the fire on April 23, 2024, and the extent of the damage it caused: “The fire was mostly where I’m standing at, charcoal damage from here out. The firewall and everything did its job. But also, the firefighters did their job. They tore down the place, and they drenched the place.” He added, “Everything was either smoke- or water-damaged, or burned.”The memory of a particular call he received that morning remains vivid. Fighting back tears, Rullo shared, “Probably 6 a.m. I got a phone call. She was just crying because she worked all year, and that was her anniversary.”One of the gym’s clients, Megan Melucci, remembers that day clearly. It was supposed to be a milestone in her health journey. Instead, it became a day of heartbreak. “Instead of waking up to the celebration, I woke up to a call from a friend who said, ‘Did you see the news?’ And I said, ‘No.’ And here it was my place, our place. And so it was devastating. And I called him right away, because this is a big family, all of us,” Melucci said.In the days that followed, the outpouring of support from clients, friends, and the local community was overwhelming. People showed up in droves to help remove debris and begin the process of rebuilding.“You get to really appreciate what you do have, and what I do have is phenomenal staff and phenomenal clients. They had every opportunity to run and just leave me hanging, and they stuck by my side. And that’s what really makes our place different than traditional gyms or other training centers was that culture that we create,” Rullo said. The training facility first opened in 2008, aiming to emphasize a more comfortable, familiar experience compared to the typical gym. Rullo said each client received personalized fitness and health support based on their needs and abilities.Rullo said many of the free weights were able to be salvaged from the fire, but all of the electrical equipment is brand new, with the addition of several new strength training features.
