The Monroe County Health Department is teaming up with Smiles on Wheels to provide dental assessments for all incoming kindergartners as part of Michigan’s new Kindergarten Oral Health Assessment Program, according to a community announcement.

The screenings are scheduled to take place at schools across the county and are designed to be quick, easy, and free for families. A registered dental hygienist will check each child’s teeth and note any visible concerns. No treatment is done during the screening, but parents will be notified if their child needs to visit a dentist.

Health law aims to support school readiness

The requirement stems from a new state law passed in December that mandates all Michigan children entering their first year of school — either kindergarten or first grade — receive an oral health assessment. The goal, officials said, is to catch potential dental problems early and ensure kids are healthy and ready to learn.

Jamie Dean, health officer and director of the Monroe County Health Department, said the screenings are part of a broader effort to support student success.

“This program ensures we are setting kids up for success in schools by keeping them healthy and giving parents resources for dental care,” Dean said in the announcement.

Parents also have the option to take their child to a family dentist and submit the screening form to their school. Smiles on Wheels is scheduled to coordinate with each local school to set dates and times for on-site screenings.

Dental health affects learning, behavior

Untreated dental issues can cause pain, disrupt sleep and eating habits, and make it harder for kids to concentrate or socialize, according to the announcement. These problems can affect a child’s confidence, behavior, and ability to learn.

Children who lack dental insurance may qualify for Michigan’s Healthy Kids Dental Program, which provides access to care. More information is available at Michigan.gov/HealthyKidsDental.
