The St Augustine Humane Society’s Share the Love Auction kicks off Jan. 20 to raise funds to provide dental care for pets in need during National Pet Dental Health Month.

Proceeds will go directly to providing dental care to patients whose families cannot afford to do so.

“Dental disease can impact a pet’s entire quality of life,” Carolyn Smith, the society’s executive director, said in a news release. “Every bid helps us relieve pain, restore health, and give these animals a second chance.”

Dental health is a critical but often overlooked element of animal care. The society estimates that 80% of dogs and 70% of cats show signs of periodontal disease by age 3.

The St Augustine Humane Society’s Dental Health Program delivers both preventive and surgical dental services, including cleanings, extractions and treatment for advanced dental disease. The society also provides affordable pet care to prevent pet homelessness and improve animal welfare.

Items donated by local businesses and supporters include gift certificates, artwork, pet care packages and weekend getaways.

“Every item and every bid makes a difference,” Smith said. “It’s a chance to share the love while supporting a great cause.”

Research shows that poor dental health can cause pets significant discomfort and lead to serious medical complications if left untreated. Pet owners should seek regular dental check-ups and teeth cleaning for their animals.

“Simple preventive care can go a long way in protecting a pet’s health,” Smith said. “With community backing, we can continue providing these essential services to families and animals who need them most.”

The St. Augustine Humane Society relies on fundraising events, donations and volunteer support to deliver its wide range of services. In addition to dental care, the society offers spay/neuter surgeries, vaccinations and general wellness exams at reduced costs.

The Share the Love Auction serves as a critical funding source for these programs.

Items available for bidding can be viewed and tracked online until the auction closes at 5 p.m. on Feb. 11.
